USA Ultimate Atlantic Coast College Club Regionals
The Smith River Sports Complex played host this past spring to the 2012 USA Ultimate Atlantic Coast D-1 College Women's and Open Regional Championships. The event took place on March 5th & 6th 2012.
A total of 16 Open and 16 Women's teams competed where 1 Open and 3 Women's teams qualified to represent the Atlantic Coast region at the National Championship tournament in Boulder, Colorado, May 25-28, 2012. Over 12,000 student athletes and more than 700 college teams from across North America entered the USA Ultimate College Championship Series in early April.
Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent's end zone. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds.
USA ultimate is the National Governing Body for the sport of Ultimate in the United States. Their mission is to advance the sport of Ultimate by enhancing and promoting Character, Community, and Competition.
When asked why USA Ultimate chose the Smith River Sports Complex the Atlantic Coast Regional Championship Branick said, "We've heard great things about the quality of the fields and hospitality of the staff at Smith River Sports Complex from other Ultimate events that have been held here.
