T-Ball started at the Smith River Sports Complex in spring of 2012.
Bill Parks, Warren Fisher, Charles Byrd, and Greg Hylton founded the original T-Ball program in 2008 with the help of the Virginia Baseball Association, a group of individuals dedicated to improving local youth baseball and softball programs including the facilities, instruction of the game, and quality of play. In 2012 they approached the Sports Complex with the opportunity to run the league.
"By playing at the Sports Complex, there is a possibility of playing more than two games at a time. In the past, we were only able to play two games at once (baseball and softball fields). The number of parents, grand-parents, sisters, brothers, etc., that attend games to support the players can now be accommodated as well," said Bill Parks, former coordinator of the Smith River T-Ball league and current head baseball coach for Bassett High School.
"Most importantly, the coaches helped to make the program a success with the amount of time they put into helping the kids with practices and games. We met some really good people that care about kids in the 4 years we ran the program, and we cannot thank all of them enough for the things they did for the children," stated Parks.
