Southern Virginia Soccer Alliance Formed
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Soccer balls are rolling throughout the foothills of Southside Virginia at the formation of the Southern Virginia Soccer Alliance (SOVAS). The new alliance brings four soccer clubs and their teams together to collaborate and accomplish common goals within the greater soccer community.
“I am very happy to see clubs working together to make soccer better here in the southern half of Virginia,” Enda Michael Crehan, Piedmont Youth Soccer League Director of Soccer and SOVA Soccer Alliance spokesman, said. “The new partnership will help strengthen soccer and give us more strength in numbers for a variety of new programs.”
SOVAS was the brainstorm of four soccer clubs that desired more opportunity for regional competition and for mutual efforts in recruitment of players, coaches, and officials. The larger participation numbers of the Alliance also opens opportunities for the players in the participating clubs to experience higher levels of soccer.
The Alliance has several goals set forth by its members. Those goals are to increase the number of children playing soccer through a range of community outreach and associated programs, enhance the youth soccer experience through common application of best practices, and progress towards a united club that better represents the southern half of Virginia in both regional and national games.
The SOVA Soccer Alliance is open to new club memberships. The Alliance is seeking additional club partners who are interested in working together to provide players an engaging, wholesome playing environment and to introduce the game to new families. SOVAS will eventually offer all-star programs and clinics as well as club vs. club festival play. The Alliance will pursue advanced education of our coaches and referees by holding joint education courses.
The SOVA Soccer Alliance promotes soccer as a healthy, competitive sport for all ages and provides schedule coordination, coach development, and officials training for its members clubs and organizations. Alliance members collaborate ideas and share resources to strengthen their individual programs and participation. The founding members include the Danville Soccer Club, the Halifax Soccer Club, the Piedmont Youth Soccer League and the Southside Soccer Club. The Alliance brings together almost 1500 players within the region. Learn more at sovasoccer.com
