Smith River Sports Complex Growing Events for fall The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) has an action-packed 2013 fall season full of tournaments, league play, high school games, practices and private rental events. In its' 2012-2013 fiscal year, the complex hosted 19 large scale events that had an estimated economic impact of well over $2.5 million dollars for the Martinsville-Henry County area. The projected economic impact for the 2013-2014 year is expected to be around $5 million for the community.

"We are very proud of the economic impact that we have brought to our community. Each year SRSC hosts more events, athletes, families, and spectators, and this generates a substantial amount of revenue for local businesses. As we grow, our impact on the local economy continues to grow," said Chairman of the Board, Jimmy McGarry.

The 2013 - 2014 year will see over 25 tournaments at the SRSC, up from 19 tournaments last year. SRSC continues to expand the variety of sports hosted at the Complex. SRSC has hosted competitions for at least 12 different sports, including soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, ultimate frisbee, corn hole, flag football, T-ball, cycling, competitive running, kayaking and canoeing.

"SRSC continues to grow with diverse events representing all ages, genders, & race," said Billy Russo, Director of Operations at SRSC. "We will continue to fill the facility with events that boost the economy as well as strive to give everyone in our local area a chance to use the facility."

This fall the Complex will see competition from several community partners that includes: Patrick Henry Community College Men's and Women's Soccer, Piedmont Youth Soccer League (PYSL) Recreation League, PYSL's Piedmont Youth Academy, PYSL Travel Soccer Program, Carlisle School Field Hockey and Men's Soccer, Martinsville Middle School Soccer, Southside Youth Football League, and the Henry County Flag Football League.

Tournaments that will bring outside visitors for the fall to the area include: The Stifel Patriot Classic Men's Soccer Tournament - September 6-7, Virginia Fusion 4.0 Ultimate Frisbee Tournament - September 14-15, Carlisle Classic Field Hockey Tournament - September 20-21, PYSL's Piedmont Youth Academy Soccer Festival - September 21, Savage Ultimate Tournament Series - October 5-6, Martinsville Melee Lacrosse Tournament - October 12-13, Hammer Head College Club Lacrosse Tournament - October 19-20, Cardinal Cup Fall Lacrosse Classic - November 2-3, USA South Fall Sports Festival - NCAA Division III Conference Championships - November 8-9, Piedmont Shootout College Showcase - November 9-10, Piedmont Shootout Youth Soccer Tournament - November 16-17.

Of these 11 events, three tournaments are new to the 2013 fall season and eight are returning. With the fall season numbers and the upcoming 2014 spring season the SRSC expects to see over 25,000 unique visitors.

The Smith River Sports Complex addresses a community need for diverse sports opportunities, enhances the visibility and image of the Martinsville-Henry County area and, through sports tourism, brings additional revenues to support local businesses and boost economic growth in the region.

The SRSC achieves its Mission by creating partnerships and strategies to develop, promote and manage a sports and entertainment facility in Martinsville and Henry County.
